Simcoe County Flag Football Finalists!

Your Nottawa Nighthawks finished up a wildly successful flag football season by swooping in and taking 2nd place at this year’s County Championships.
The day got off to an auspicious start as the Hawks trounced a very good W.R. Best team 26-8 to start round robin play.  Despite being placed in the best pool at the entire tournament, Nottawa was able to finish first in their group and move on to the championship round.
The first round of playffos saw a rematch of last year’s final as the Nighthawks faced a bitter team from Guthrie.  Unfortunately for the team from Oro Medonte, it would be another day of disappointment as Ewan Botelho led the Hawk’s defense consisting of Samantha Lundy, Tyler Karl, Jayden Soychak, Lucas Thom, Spencer Risk, Sydney Baumgarten, Megan Ford, and  Ashley Stewart to a crushing shut out in a 14-0 victory.
The second round match-up pitted the Hawks against the second seeded team in the entire tournament, St Francis.  It was a see-saw battle all game which saw St Francis take the lead with only 6 plays left in the game.  But after Gareth Brownrigg completed a long pass to Taran Singh, Olivia Sproule, Julia Stewart, Sarah Fisher, Hayley Reid, Conor Bruno, Julia Stewart, James Blackstock, Adam Service, Miles Baker and Anthony Golby led the offence down the field and scored the go ahead  touchdown leaving only 2 plays left.  From there the defense shut the door and Nottawa marched to the final.
In the final, the Nighthawks came up against the first place team in the tournament, Mount Forest.  Despite some heroic efforts from all players, Mount Forest won the game and took home the title.
Despite the obvious disappointing end to the tournament, this seaon  can only be looked upon as an incredible success for the Nighthawks who played with amazing teamwork and discipline the entire day.  Every member of the team did their part to bring home the banner and should be extremely proud of what they were able to accomplish.
Despite the second place finish, you all are truly deserving of being called champions.

Coach Bowhey would like to thank all of the parents who once again braved the elements to cheer on the Hawks.  And also Mr. Bridson, who put in many long hours throughout the season to help bring home, not only 1, but TWO banners.

Nighthawks win another Area Flag Football Championship!

Your Nottawa Nighthawks continued their winning ways by capturing yet another Area Flag Football Championship, their 4th in a row and 5th in 6 years. The ‘Hawks started the day off a bit slowly, but still managed to get by Birchview Dunes 24-14 in their first game. That seemed to buoy the confidence of our players as they went on to dismantle St. Noel in the next game 30-12. Their first two wins set up a rematch against St. Mary’s, who had beaten Nottawa on their own field earlier in the season. After a see-saw first half, Ewan, Samantha, Tyler, Jayden, Lucas, Spencer, Sydney, Miles, Megan, and Ashley got their feet under them and shut down the Huskies’ attack in the 2nd half, allowing the ‘Hawks to soar to a 42-20 victory. The championship game pitted your Nighthawks against Mountain View. Once again our defense began slowly and the Mounties jumped out to a 12-8 lead. But as before, Ewan and the rest of the defense cranked it up in the second half, completely shutting out the Mounties’ offense, and allowing Gareth, Olivia, Julia, Taran, Sarah, Emmet, Hayley, Conor, Julia, James, Adam and Anthony to lift the 'Hawks to an easy 38-12 victory. Everyone watching the tournament agreed that it was the Nighthawks ‘will to win’ which set them apart on this day. Each team seemed capable of matching up with Nottawa for parts of each game, but none could keep up with the 'Hawks relentless attack, on both offense and defense, over the course of an entire game. As usual, Coaches Bowhey and Bridson are ecstatic, not just with the win, but also the sportsmanship and maturity shown by the entire team throughout the day. Be sure to congratulate your Nighthawks and wish them luck as they prepare to head to Barrie to compete in the County Championships next week. Finally, a big thanks to all the parents who cheered us on to victory and a special ‘Shout-Out’ to Mrs. Botelho who drove all the way back to Nottawa to pick up the jerseys that Mr. Bridson forgot to pack into Mr. Bowhey’s car!
